General Motors’ future product plan includes a back-to-basics, go-anywhere Hummer H4—a rough-and-tough competitor for the Jeep Wrangler. The fourth Hummer could be on sale by 2008 or 2009.
A GM source confirms the company is looking for ways of making a small Hummer on its various sport/utility vehicle and pickup platforms. GM engineers and designers are working on the project, but a chassis for the vehicle has yet to be selected. One possibility is a two-seater, focused on the most rugged off-roading possible, similar to the Hummer dune buggy we illustrated earlier this year

Externally mounted spare tire and jerry can coughs up some additional interior space for an 20 gallon auxilliary fuel tank. Other notables include a chunk of lexan installed in the cowl induction hood so you can get a face full of that mean LS7 breathing out of a custom exhaust that exits through four differnet ports. The hood and fenders have been retrofitted with quick release hardware so when the team thrashes one, they can just toss on another and keep on keeping on.

We received a last-minute invite this year to join up again with Rod Hall Racing and Team Hummer to participate in the 40th anniversary of the Baja 1000, and there wasn't a more suitable choice in our long-term fleet than our 2008 FWOTY winner, the Hummer H3 Alpha.

Not only is our H3 Alpha the same model that Chad Hall used to win his class (as well as the championship) in the 1000 this year, but it provides the ruggedness that the Baja terrain demands, as well as a comfortable place to cover the hundreds of miles necessary to chase the race truck between our own rides in the race.

A commonly used adage states, "If you have to ask, you can't afford it." In Frank's case, if you have to ask how big, you probably don't roll like he does. After driving the '06 Hummer H2 SUT in stock condition, the bug finally bit and the President of Lexani went to the drawing board and created a set of beautiful 32-inch (not a misprint) Asanti AF401 wheels complete with a two-tone color-matched face with chrome accents and hoops. With a price tag of $35,000 for the set, these babies should have their own quartet of Dobermans. The wheels posed one unique problem, could anyone build a tire to accommodate the massive wheels? Yokohoma stepped up to the plate and delivered a home run with tires sized 335/30R32. Now Frank was rolling big, but the Hummer still looked too stock for his taste so he delivered the H2 to Eagle's Auto Body for an upgrade.

German tuner Bremgo has took a BMW 335i, slapped on some M3 lookalike parts on it and shoehorned the huge 5.0 liter V10 from the BMW M5 into the coupe’s engine bay. They used the SMG drivetrain instead of the manual transmission. This is effectively the first SMG-equipped 3 Coupe to be running around until the M DCT-equipped BMW M3 is launched sometime next year. Other than the body parts and engine swap, the car also receives a artge perforated leather steering wheel, AC Schnitzer 5-spoke alloy wheels.

Bremgo has stuffed the M5’s V10 into other cars before, including an E46 M3 CSL. In this particular application they tuned up the M5’s engine to 550 PS, so you can expect this E92’s M5 motor to have similiar specs. They have also played with diesel abit, stuffing the 330d’s turbodiesel into the M3 Cabriolet, effectively taming it down a little and making it a nice fuel efficient small GT of sorts.

The current M5 has a maximum power of 507 hp, and it’s already a rocket ship; so, the 2009 M5 will be something insane, beyond our imagination!

Until very recently, the German car makers was something of a purist concerning petrol engines, preferring naturally aspirated over forced induction. But the current twin-turbo straight-six petrol in the 335i and 535i proves BMW can do ’charging as least as well as anyone else. Usually better. And a turbocharger or two would do wonders for the M5’s low-down torque, which we’ve found to be a little lacking in the past.

Spy photographers report that the 2009 M5 sound incredible aggressive (imagine that!) and that it may have also been using a DSG transmission in place of the current SMG unit.

Light, affordable, agile, sublime. The attributes that made BMW's 2002 an instant classic from its European premier in 1966 will do the same for the 128i and 135i models of the 2008 BMW 1 Series Coupe if they're as good by the seat of the pants as they are on paper.

Designed to fill the price space between two icons, the Mini Cooper and the 3 Series, the 1 Series features a lightweight aluminum front suspension and five-link rear axle, frameless doors, new L-shaped taillamps with LED highlights and corona daytime running lights ... the type of features that make more expensive Bimmers such magic.

The 128i comes with the 230-horsepower, 200 pound-foot 3.0-liter with Valvetronic, and the 135i gets the twin-turbo 3.0 of course, good for 300 horses, 300 pound-feet from 1400 rpm, and BMW says, a 5.3-second 0-62 mph time and electronically limited 155 mph top speed.

We all think we are pretty smart but when it comes to what is cool-leave it to the kids. Every time grandson Freddie comes to see us he will always make a detour first to see what is in the parking lot. If it meets with his approval he’ll race up the stairs with a huge smile on his face and instead of hello, how are you and all that he’ll simply say “can we please take this baby for a spin”.

It was most certainly the case with BMW’s 97 thousand dollar dream machine. It may become a museum piece as a result of European legislation but in the meantime it most definitely is a mechanical tour de force, the sort of car only very dedicated and talented engineers can create.

For a start it has a 5 liter V10 engine with an 8,250-rpm red line. It also has a button to increase power from 400 to 500 horsepower, something I’ve never come across before. Pretty amazing if you think about it.

Did I hit 155 miles per hour? Alas, no. Marin County may be beautiful and friendly most of the time but when it comes to driving at over 100 miles per hour the jail beckons. Were Freddie and I naughty? Of course, but just once.

Some desperately boring young man in a tuned Toyota (of all things!) wanted a drag race from the lights. Well, he got somewhat more than he asked for. I hit the power button for the extra 100 horses, watched the lights change and boooom! We were off. 1st, second, 3rd before I lifted off in order not to get a ticket and b. to look for the hero in the Toyota. He was so far behind we needed binoculars to catch sight of him. Imagine going through all 7 (!) gears at 7000rpm all the way to 155 miles per hour!

The move to eight cylinders in the fourth generation BMW M3 provides a powerplant offering the seemingly disparate characteristics of more power, increased efficiency and reduced weight when compared with the previous six-cylinder M3 engine. Displacing 3,999 cubic centimeters (4.0 liters), the new light-alloy engine produces 414 hp at 8,300 rpm and 295 pounds-feet of torque at 3,900 rpm with 85 percent of the maximum torque available consistently through 6,500 rpm. This power output represents a 24 percent increase over the six-cylinder from the last generation M3 and it comes with a seven percent weight saving. Compression ratio is dialed in to 12.0:1 and redline is set at 8,400 rpm.The V8 engine of the new BMW M3 Convertible boasts the company's variable double-VANOS camshaft management. Offering extremely fast and responsive valve timing, this technology reduces charge cycle losses and improves the output, torque and response of the engine, with a positive influence on fuel economy and emission management.A separate throttle butterfly for each cylinder - eight in this instance - is a feature adapted from BMW M's racing heritage and provides immediate reaction to the gas pedal at all times. Two stepper motors operate the four throttle butterflies on each row of cylinders, giving the engine a particularly sensitive response at low speeds together with an immediate reaction whenever the driver presses down the accelerator for extra power and performance.A volume flow-controlled, pendulum-slide cell pump supplies the engine with lubricating oil, delivering the quantity required by the engine. Wet sump oil lubrication, optimized for dynamic performance, ensures consistent oil supply to the high-rpm engine at all times, particularly in extreme braking maneuvers. The system features two oil sumps-a small oil sump in front of the front axle subframe and a large oil sump behind it.A new, comprehensive electronic management system coordinates all engine functions with optimum efficiency and maximizes operational integration with the clutch, gearbox, steering and brakes. In addition, the engine control unit performs a wide range of on-board diagnosis functions and masterminds the ancillary engine units.A highlight of the engine management system is the use of ion-current technology to determine engine knock as well as misfire and poor combustion events within the cylinders. Contrary to conventional methods, this monitoring and control function is performed precisely where the phenomena occurs-within the combustion chambers. The spark plug in each cylinder senses and controls the risk of knocking, at the same time monitoring the correct ignition and recognizing any misfiring. In other words, the spark plug acts as an actuator for the ignition and as a sensor monitoring the combustion process, and is therefore able to distinguish between a misfire and poor combustion. This dual function of the spark plugs facilitates the diagnostic procedures required in service and maintenance.

Karl Friedrich Rapp is the name of the founder of BMW - one of the biggest world wide car manufacturing companies. BMW or Bayerische Motoren Werke (Bavarian Motor Works) was founded in 1916 as a successor to the Rapp Motor.Many people think that the logo of BMW comes from a spinning white propeller seen in the background of the blue sky. This may be so but in fact it is known that it also comes from the white and blue flag of Bavaria – the largest state of Germany. The capital city of the state is Munich and this is the place where even today we can find the BMW Headquarters.In 1916 with the foundation of the company a contract was secured for building V12 engines. These engines were about to be used in the creation of the automobiles from Austro-Daimler. These 12 cylinders V engines were at first used in aircrafts which is the original plan of the BMW Company. Taking in account the time when the company was founded it was very likely for them to continue like that.However in 1919 after the World War I and the Treaty of Versailles the production of aircraft in Germany was prohibited and that quickly changed the politics of BMW. They began making brakes for the Rail transport. Soon after that BMW was able to design a motorcycle engine which was used for the creation of a motorcycle called with the model name Victoria. However Victoria was not built by BMW but by another company in Nuremberg.In 1924 BMW made a model of a motorcycle which was the first one they built - the R32. This was a turning point in the BMW history because it was a major achievement and for decades they used its technology – 500 cc engines cooled down by the air. Soon after that BMW added one new innovation – the driveshaft. It came to replace the chain for driving the rear wheel and became a mark of BMW for quite some time.In the German city Eisenach in 1927 began the production of Dixi – under license but only a year after that the Dixi Company was bought by BMW and they began mass production together with the model Austin Seven.When the World War I began BMW took its place in it because of the German army’s motorized division. BMW was the main supplier and even today words like Luftwaffe and Wehrmacht brings many memories.
